United Nations Voluntary Fund on Disability

Applications will be open 1 February – 31 March 2012 for small grants to NGOs under the United Nations Voluntary Fund on Disability to implement the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The Fund is administered by the Secretariat for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, within the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

All forms and accompanying documents should be submitted along with applications for funding from the UN Voluntary Fund on Disability

Conference on Disability-Inclusive MDGs and Aid Effectiveness

This conference is the second in a series of global forums organised jointly by Leonard Cheshire Disability and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. Bringing together disabled people’s organisations, NGOs, UN agencies and academics, the conference offers a unique opportunity to develop innovative ways to bring disability into the international development mainstream.

The conference will enhance participants’ understanding of how disability-inclusive development contributes to the full achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It will also act as a platform for exchanging lessons learned and ways to improve the quality and effectiveness of development cooperation through the inclusion of persons with disabilities. Recommendations will feed into the regional preparatory process towards the conclusion of the Second Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons in 2012.

Please note: Interested authors are invited to submit papers on any of the sub-themes to iortiz@unicef.org, jchai@unicef.org and mcummins@unicef.org NOT later than 20 October 2011. Each paper should include an abstract, JEL classification and the sub-theme for which it is being submitted.

The Pacific Rim International Forum on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

28th Annual Pacific Rim International Conference on Disability & Diversity

World Autism Awareness Day

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that manifests itself during the first three years of life. The rate of autism in all regions of the world is high and it has a tremendous impact on children, their families, communities and societies.

Throughout its history, the United Nations family has promoted the rights and well-being of the disabled, including children with developmental disabilities. In 2008, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities entered into force, reaffirming the fundamental principle of universal human rights for all.

The United Nations General Assembly unanimously declared 2 April as World Autism Awareness Day (A/RES/62/139) to highlight the need to help improve the lives of children and adults who suffer from the disorder so they can lead full and meaningful lives.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, 3 December, aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.

It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

The Day was established by the World Programme of Action concerning Disabled Persons, adopted by General Assembly in 1982.
