It is widely recognised that people with disability are among the poorest and most vulnerable in developing countries. The United Nations estimates that approximately 10 per cent of the world’s population, or approximately 650 million people, have a disability and about 80 per cent of the population with a disability live in developing countries.
We hear a lot about the MDGs, but not always how they are relevant and impact on people with disabilities. This document from the Australian Disability+Development Consortium (ADDC) outlines the significance of including people with disabilities in the Millenium Development Goals; providing informative statistics and figures in context for each goal and asserting the need for development to be disability inclusive in order to be truly effective.
