The purposes of this report are to assess the technical and financial viability of exporting fresh ginger to New Zealand and to make recommendations for developing export markets for ginger and other PNG fresh produce.
The future of ginger production and commercialisation for export markets is characterised by both opportunities and constraints. The main opportunity for PNG ginger is that there is a ready market for it in New Zealand with the Biosecurity Quarantine Arrangements now in place between the PNG National Agriculture Quarantine and Inspection Agency and the Biosecurity New Zealand. The quality of ginger produced in the Sogeri area in the Central province was confirmed by buyers in New Zealand during a trial shipment to be of good quality. Farmers in Sogari appear to be entrepreneurial and, with appropriate support, may be able to take on the challenge of meeting the stringent requirements of export markets for quality and quarantine.
