This report presents findings from a global study on people with intellectual disabilities, and their families. It gives voice to their common experiences of poverty and social exclusion, exploring the causes and consequences of this. It reflects on the Millennium Development Goals and considers why this group has not benefited from them and finishes with the beginning of a global agenda to combat exclusion and poverty.
This report is based on a study undertaken by Inclusion International, a key international organisation working to value the rights and contributions of people with intellectual disabilities. It presents the findings in relation to each of the Millennium Development Goals and contains many case studies and stories. The third section of this report contains regional recommendations that are useful for governments, development organizations and disability organizations. This is a broad based, informative report, and would be useful for a wide range of groups interested in disability, social exclusion and development.
