This resource manual provides insights on the theory and practice of human-rights based approaches to development. Drawing on existing experiences with other human rights conventions, this resource provides frameworks for analysing disability related laws, policies and practices. It is designed to build greater understanding of human rights based approaches and how they specifically apply to the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (UNCRPD).
This resource has been collaboratively developed by the United Nations Population Fund, The Secretariat for the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities and the Wellesley Centre for Woman. It is designed to provide guidance at a global and national level when applying the UNCRPD to development efforts, particularly for development of new legislation, policy and programmatic initiatives. It focuses on the experiences of the Convention on the Elimination Against all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) to provide recommendations and action steps. Throughout the publication explores how gender and disability converge and intersect.
