Australia's geographic location within the Asia Pacific Region is unique, and represents a challenge few donors face in terms of the proximity of countries affected by poverty, deficient governance and political instability. Australia's security and economic progress and development interests in neighbouring countries are therefore highly interdependent. This implies that, for Australia, defining and implementing effective development co operation policies with its neighbouring countries is both central to its national interest and highly challenging.
