World Day to Combat Desertification

Date: 17 June 2012
Organisation: UN

There is a close relationship between livelihood, ecosystem wellbeing and soils that are rich in biodiversity. Healthy soils produce life, and yet soil health depends a lot on how individuals use their land. What we do to our soils determines the quality and quantity of the food we eat and how our ecosystems serve us. Our increasing ecological interdependence also means enhancing soils anywhere enhances life everywhere. Where well tended, soil biodiversity will be a resource for use by future generations, and for services that are yet to be discovered.

In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 17 the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought to promote public awareness of the issue, and the implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in those countries experiencing serious drought and/or desertification, particularly in Africa.

International Day Against Nuclear Tests

Date: 29 August 2012
Organisation: UN

This Day is meant to galvanize the United Nations, Member States, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, youth networks and the media to inform, educate and advocate about the necessity of banning nuclear tests as a valuable step towards achieving a safer world. The Preamble of the resolution emphasizes that "every effort should be made to end nuclear tests in order to avert devastating and harmful effects on the lives and health of people" and that "the end of nuclear tests is one of the key means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.”

The International Day was created as a result of the many recent bilateral and multilateral governmental level developments, of broad movements in civil society, and of the efforts of the UN Secretary-General himself.

Since its establishment, the International Day against Nuclear Tests, together with other events and actions, has helped to create a global environment with more optimistic prospects towards a world free of nuclear weapons. There have been visible signs of progress on various fronts.

This year, 2011, marks the Twentieth Anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site.

- Special programs and events on saving the ozone layer;
- The distribution of the UNEP's public awareness posters to be used for events centered on the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer;
