Photo Contest: Poverty Relief Through a Lens

The China Development Gateway and China Internet Information Center launched a photo contest called “Lending Spotlight: Poverty Relief Through a Lens” on May 15. Entries will be accepted until Sept. 20, with an awards ceremony in Nov. 2012.

The contest focuses on global development and aims to share China’s experience in poverty reduction with other countries, and build international support to combat poverty. The contest is open to amateur as well as professional photographers, and entries can be submitted online or by regular mail. The China Development Gateway is part of the Country Gateway network.

The G8 NATO Summit Chicago 2012

Chicago will also host the Atlantic alliance from May 18 to 21, 2012, amid discussions of its relevance in today’s security environment.

Leaders from around the world will gather in Chicago this spring for two diplomatic summits hosted by President Barack Obama. The G8 and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will hold back-to-back meetings in Chicago from May 18-21, allowing the city to highlight its economic vitality, its arts and architecture, and its can-do spirit.

- This will be the first time an American city other than Washington has hosted a NATO summit.
- This is also the first time in more than 30 years that any city has hosted both gatherings.
- More than 2,000 journalists from across the world are expected in Chicago to chronicle the events.

Civil Society and the Global Fight against Corruption

Corruption is on the rise globally.  The US Department of Justice has tripled in two years the number of offshore corruption cases it is working on, and even Australia has fallen to eighth (from first a decade ago) in Transparency International’s global Corruption Perceptions Index.  The issues of integrity, transparency, accountability and trust in governments, companies and institutions have never been more important.

To discuss these matters and in particular the work of Transparency International, the Institute is delighted to welcome a global leader in the fight against corruption.

Pacific Psychosocial Forum

The Pacific Psychosocial Forum is a bi-annual event facilitated by the Mandala Foundation that aims to advocate for and enhance psychosocial awareness and systems of staff care and community support throughout the Pacific region. In 2012, the 3-day forum will be held in the Solomon Islands and will focus on the theme of ‘Enabling Resilience in a Crisis’.

The Forum is open to all persons with an interest in psychosocial support and/or managing humanitarian crises and is particularly relevant to local, expatriate and Headquarters-based staff and managers of NGOs operating in the Pacific region.

Africa Day

On 25 May 2012, people all over the world will recognise the 49th anniversary of Africa Day.

Africa Day is also known as Africa Liberation Day and it is celebrated every year in most states that are members of the African Union (AU).

Africa Day commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May in 1963. This body was renamed the African Union in July 2002 after forging links with the African Economic Community. The founding charter was signed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and the date continues to mark widespread celebrations of African unity.

2012 ACP/EU high level meeting

Some 400-500 ACP/EU Ministers and officials from regional and international organisations will attend this high level meeting and international conference in Port Vila, Vanuatu - the first time that the Republic of Vanuatu will host an international meeting of this magnitude.

The meeting in Port Vila will discuss major issues that define the future relationship between the ACP group and the European Commission. Only Fiji and Papua New Guinea have hosted the ACP/EU Meetings in the past and Vanuatu will be the third in the Pacific region to play host.

International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

The General Assembly has decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse. This resolution recommended further action with regard to the report and conclusions of the 1987 International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The General Assembly recognized that despite continued and increased efforts by the international community, the world drug problem continues to constitute a serious threat to public health, the safety and well-being of humanity, in particular young people, and the national security and sovereignty of States, and that it undermines socio-economic and political stability and sustainable development.

International Justice Day

International Justice Day is celebrated throughout the world on July 17 as part of an effort to recognise the emerging system of international criminal justice. July 17th was chosen because it is the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute, the treaty that created the International Criminal Court.

Each year, people around the world use this day to host events to promote international criminal justice, especially support for the International Criminal Court.

The day has been successful enough to attract international news attention, and for groups to use the day to focus attention on particular issues such as genocide in Darfur, Falun Dafa, and serious crimes of violence against women.

43rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders' Meeting

The Pacific Islands Forum Leaders' Meeting is an annual meeting between the leaders of the 14 Pacific Island Forum member countries, hosted in a different member country each year. In 2011, the meeting was held in Auckland, New Zealand from 6 - 9 September.

Forum countries and territories include Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Polynesian Leaders Group (PLG) meeting

The Polynesian Leaders Group (PLG) was formed in Samoa on 19 November 2011 during a meeting of eight Polynesian countries.

The first meeting of the Leaders and Representatives of Polynesian countries was held in Apia, Samoa and attended by the Prime Ministers of Cook Islands, Samoa and Tonga, the Governor of American Samoa, the Ulu o Tokelau and Special Envoys from the governments of Niue, Tuvalu, and Ma’ohi Nui-French Polynesia.

The first annual meeting of the PLG will be held in conjunction with the Pacific Islands Forum Meeting in Cook Islands in 2012.

The meeting decided that the next Chair of the PLG will be Cook Islands and will take up duties of the chairmanship at the first annual meeting of the PLG.

Global Democracy Day

On November 8th 2007, UN declared the 15th of September the International Day of Democracy.

Member states, organisations, non-governmental organisations and individuals are invited to commemorate the International Day of Democracy in an appropriate manner that contributes to raising public awareness.

10th World Conference of the International Ombudsman Institute

International Day for Tolerance

Among other things, the Declaration affirms that tolerance is neither indulgence nor indifference. Tolerance recognizes the universal human rights and fundamental freedoms of others. World Philosophy Day

International Anti-Corruption Day

By resolution 58/4 of 31 October 2003, the General Assembly designated 9 December as International Anti-Corruption Day.

This decision was taken in order to raise awareness of corruption and of the role of the United Nations Convention against Corruption in combating and preventing it.

UNODC and UNDP have developed a joint global campaign, focusing on how corruption hinders efforts to achieve the internationally agreed upon Millennium Development Goals and impacts education, health, justice, democracy, prosperity and development.

World Press Freedom Day
