Disability Inclusive Development
There are over 400 million people with disabilities in the Asia Pacific region (UNESCAP). Globally, at least 10% of people live with a disability on a daily basis, and this percentage is set to increase due to a combination of poverty, conflict, malnutrition, HIV/AIDS, natural disasters and an ageing population. People with disabilities consistently face barriers to education, exclusion from the workforce and most often don't have access to the basic aids and equipment which allow them independence. This means that not only are people with disabilities themselves affected, their families and communities too are held back from progress. It is unsurprising then that disability is both a cause and a consequence of poverty.
If development programs are to succeed in reducing poverty and achieving the Millennium Development Goals, there is a need for those involved in all sectors affecting poverty reduction and international development to proactively include people with disabilities as part of effective inclusive development practice.
