Jack Dunford, MBE, is the Executive Director of the Thai Burma Border Consortium (TBBC) and the Chairperson of the Committee for Coordination of Services to Displaced Persons in Thailand (CCSDPT). Mr Dunford's visit to Australia will focus on conflict in eastern Burma and the resulting issues for refugees in Thailand.

Ongoing emergency: Refugees and the displaced people of Burma

This will be an evening of critique on the issues affecting refugees and displaced people of Burma.
act for peace invites Thailand based keynote speaker, Jack Dunford MBE, Executive Director of the Thai Burma Border Consortium and Chairperson
of the Committee for Coordination of Services to Displaced Persons in Thailand.
Jack will be joined by Burma experts Alison Tate, Garry Woodard, Minthura Wynn and representatives
from the Australian Karen community.
The speakers will address:
- The ongoing confl ict in eastern Burma and the resulting refugee issues in Thailand
- Recent events in Burma in the light of developments in the international scene
- Political instability within Burma, and the impact of current events including Cyclone Nargis

International Humanitarian Action Training (IHAT)

A three day introductory course for professionals and volunteers, designed to provide the skills essential to respond effectively in a humanitarian crisis.
The course will be conducted and facilitated by experienced international practitioners, experts from a variety of humanitarian organisations, as well as Red Cross in-house experts.
Participants could come from a wide sector area, including NGOs, government departments, private international development agencies/groups, private sector, technical associations and professional volunteer based groups.

Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Workshop, Banda Aceh, Indonesia

The purpose of the DRM workshop is:
- To provide practical skills for humanitarian/relief practitioners who are involved in the risk reduction, emergency response and/or recovery initiatives in disaster risk management (DRM) situations
- To provide some practical skills for development practitioners as they identify and prepare recovery/ development projects for funding proposals
This is a 4 day workshop, with Day 3 including a field visit to look at recovery and development initiatives in and around Banda Aceh.

The purpose of the DRM workshop is to provide practical skills for Humanitarian/Relief practitioners who are involved in the Risk Reduction, Emergency Response and/or Recovery Initiatives in Disaster Risk Management (DRM) situations.
The workshop will look at global best practice in both DRM and the development and implementation of Disaster Risk Management Plans. This training is aimed at governmental, non-government organisation (NGO), Red Cross, UN and other stakeholder personnel. It will draw down on lessons learnt from both Bangladesh (eg the 2007 Cyclone Sidr) and other Asian (eg the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami; 2008 Myanmar Cyclone Nargis) major hazards and disasters.
