Australian Electoral Commission

Australian Electoral CommissionSince 1989, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has assisted the authorities of other countries and international organisations to prepare for, plan and conduct elections and referendums in cases approved by Australia's Minister for Foreign Affairs.

The great bulk of the AEC's overseas projects are funded by AusAID, and have a strong focus on capacity building for sustainable democratic development.

Assistance can be provided on almost any aspect of electoral administration, with the exception of political party development.

The AEC works in cooperation with other significant providers of international electoral assistance - including the International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES), the United Nations Electoral Assistance Division (UNEAD), UNDP, and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) - and supports networking between election administrations.

The AEC also devises tools for use in improving electoral administration, two of the most important being the BRIDGE electoral administrators' course (developed in cooperation with UNEAD and IDEA, and described at its website - http://www.bridge-project.org), and a Generic Voter Registration System that has proven capable of being adapted to the needs of individual countries relatively easily and cheaply.

Development efforts are mainly focused in the South Pacific, South East Asia and Southern Africa, though projects are sometimes undertaken further away.
