Centre for International Health, Curtin University

AHI Winner of the 2007 National Carrick Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning - Programs that Enhance Learning: Postgraduate

The Centre for International Health (CIH) was established by Curtin University in 1999. The Centre has the responsibility for ongoing health education, consultancy and research and development in the international arena.

Since its inception the Centre has developed a five-tiered teaching program, established teaching links with international universities and developed a research arm featuring a significant number of international links.

CIH academic staff, students and adjunct staff are involved in a broad range of research and development activity, some of it world-leading, across numerous countries, including; Papua New Guinea, Bangladesh, East Timor, Africa, India, Australia, Myanmar and Malaysia. Their research focuses on capacity-building in developing countries and with marginalised communities in resource-rich countries. Their primary areas of focus are: maternal and child health, indigenous health, HIV and other infectious diseases, nutrition, migrant health, health systems (including delivery of primary healthcare and low-cost appropriate technologies for the very poor), health and wellbeing in post-conflict societies and capacity-building in traumatised communities. In addition to their international work, we also have experience working with indigenous, migrant and refugee communities in Australia and overseas.

The National Carrick Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, which was awarded to CIH this year, acknowledges the high quality of individual and team excellence in teaching and support for student learning in higher education.
