Burnet Institute

The Burnet Institute is Australia's largest communicable diseases research institute, investigating some of today's most serious viral infections such as HIV, hepatitis, and measles. We integrate basic and applied laboratory research in virology and other communicable diseases with field research and the design, implementation, and evaluation of public health programs.

In 1992, the Burnet Institute officially established the Centre for International Health to focus and coordinate its activities in the international health sphere. Its aims are to respond to the growing health problems in developing nations by providing technical advice, applied research, policy development, training, and capacity development for communicable disease prevention and control programs, usually in a community health context.

In 1998, the Centre for Harm Reduction was established to promote policies and programs in low and middle-income countries to minimise the transmission of blood-borne viruses, such as HIV and hepatitis C, among injecting drug users, their families, and communities.

The Burnet Institute is currently an implementing partner in seven AusAID bilateral women's and children's health and/or HIV/AIDS projects in PNG, Indonesia, China (Tibet), and the Pacific and SE Asia Regions. The Institute is a fully accredited development NGO and has community-based activities in Indonesia, Laos, China (Tibet), Myanmar, Mozambique, PNG, and Sri Lanka.

The Institute also conducts eight post-graduate health courses - all focused on developing countries -- on behalf of Monash University. A number of these units are available in short-course format.
