Paying the price: Why rich countries must invest now in a war on poverty (pdf 1.34Mb)
Oxfam states that progress towards meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) has fallen far short of the promises made in 2000.
At the current rate, all but one of them will certainly be missed. The cost of failure will be high: 45 million more children will die between now and 2015 than would be the case if the world met the goal to reduce child mortality.
The report also calculates that 97 million more children will be out of school by 2015 unless urgent action is taken. Oxfam finds that rich countries' aid budgets are half what they were in 1960 and poor countries are paying back a staggering $100 million a day in debt repayments.
This 93 page report provides case studies and examples and highlights that combating corruption and building effective institutions play an important part in achieving the MDGs.
