Public-private partnerships

Public-private partnerships and the poor in water and sanitation

This project, being conducted by Loughborough University's Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC), will feature a series of case studies involving both urban and rural situations to investigate different organisational relationships. Both successes and failures will be investigated.

A key feature of this work is the prominent role, which our Southern partners will play in the planning, implementation and analysis of the case study material which forms the basis for developing the project outputs. The lessons learned will be developed into guiding principles to assist in the establishment of public private partnerships (PPP) arrangements, which are more inclusive, leading to better water and sanitation provision for the poor. This has a particular impact on women and children by improving health and freeing-up time.

The purpose of this project is to determine workable processes and strategies which encourage PPP in the provision of water and sanitation services for the urban poor. The focus is wide, including relevant experience from countries in South Asia, South East Asia, Southern Africa and Latin America.
