Australian Development Gateway

The Australian Development Gateway (ADG) strives to support members of the development community in their efforts to reduce poverty and enhance sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. The site has been created with participation from members of government, private, academia and non-government organisations. User feedback mechanisms have been incorporated to guide future directions of the site. The site is optimised for low bandwidth access to enable the widest participation throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Between 12 - 23 November 2007, ADG guest specialists answered your questions on psychosocial health and disability issues in aid and development. This session is now closed.

Paul Deany is the Coordinator of the Australian Disability and Development Consortium, a national network focusing attention, expertise and action on disability issues in developing countries and building a national platform for disability advocacy. He also works with Christian Blind Mission International (CBMI) Australia and has worked in development, HIV/AIDS, disability and public health with the Burnet Institute, World Vision, UNAIDS, UNDP and assorted NGOs in over a dozen countries, particularly in Asia.

Kirsty Thompson is the Manager of the Disability Advocacy and Training Unit at Christian Blind Mission International (CBMI) Australia. Her work involves advocacy and training on disability inclusive development with mainstream government and non-government development agencies, capacity building and program planning and evaluations within CBM and their project partners. Kirsty is a trained occupational therapist, with research, education and practice experiences in disability and community practice. Her PhD (from the University of Sydney) was a cultural examination of community disability services with families of children with a disability.

Amanda Allan is an Australian psychologist and the Operational Director of Antares Foundation Australia, an international organisation devoted to improving the quality of humanitarian aid and overseas development through the strengthening of management and staff support systems within aid agencies. Amanda has worked as an independent consultant, trainer and counsellor in psychosocial staff support issues to a number of NGOs based in Australia including Medecins Sans Frontieres, Oxfam Australia, AUSTCARE, Australian Red Cross and Australian Volunteers International.
