Australian Development Gateway

The Australian Development Gateway (ADG) strives to support members of the development community in their efforts to reduce poverty and enhance sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. The site has been created with participation from members of government, private, academia and non-government organisations. User feedback mechanisms have been incorporated to guide future directions of the site. The site is optimised for low bandwidth access to enable the widest participation throughout the Asia Pacific region.

This policy brief provides guidance on working with the formal financial sector to expand and deepen access to finance for the poor, who are often excluded from formal financial services. Key principles include:

  • Adopting clear social goals for providing financial services for the most financially excluded
  • Clearly identifying how interventions meet market needs and support innovations
  • Developing workable definitions and methodologies for measuring access to microfinance
  • Undertake sector-wide studies to monitor progress in reducing financial exclusion
