Australian Development Gateway

The Australian Development Gateway (ADG) strives to support members of the development community in their efforts to reduce poverty and enhance sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. The site has been created with participation from members of government, private, academia and non-government organisations. User feedback mechanisms have been incorporated to guide future directions of the site. The site is optimised for low bandwidth access to enable the widest participation throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Scaling up microfinance services - an overview

This paper examines specific issues in the delivery of microfinance services and outlines some new approaches towards scaling up. The paper is divided into 5 sections covering:

  • The role of microfinance in reducing vulnerability and enhancing the prospects of growth for poor households
  • The broad challenges in micro finance
  • Overview of the various micro financial services (insurance, savings and investment, credit and other risk management instruments)
  • Issues specific to microfinance institutions (MFIs) in India
  • Key areas for further research and debate.
