Australian Development Gateway

The Australian Development Gateway (ADG) strives to support members of the development community in their efforts to reduce poverty and enhance sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. The site has been created with participation from members of government, private, academia and non-government organisations. User feedback mechanisms have been incorporated to guide future directions of the site. The site is optimised for low bandwidth access to enable the widest participation throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Guiding principles on regulation and supervision of microfinance institutions (pdf 264kb)

This paper is designed to give guidance to staff of international donors, national authorities, practitioners and other stakeholders who participate in the decision making process for microfinance.

The paper is divided in to five parts as follows:

  • discusses terminology and preliminary issues
  • outlines areas of regulatory concern that do not call for 'prudential' regulation
  • discusses prudential treatment of microfinance and microfinance institutions (MFIs)
  • looks at the challenges surrounding supervision
  • summarises key policy recommendations
