In Her Footsteps: Special screening by Opportunity International Australia

  • Date: 2 October 2008
  • Location: Sydney, Australia
  • Host: Opportunity International Australia
  • What happens when you take 35 Australian women and place them in a dirty, noisy slum in New Delhi with no sanitation, running water or electricity, surrounded by thousands of people living in abject need?

In Her Footsteps is a film that captures the experiences of these Australian women where they celebrate International Women's Day while exploring how microfinance is said to be influencing a silent yet powerful revolution amongst India's poor women.

Illustrating how microfinance works to empower them to return dignity to their lives, the film captures the breakdown of barriers between the two contrasting cultures, and the transformation each visiting woman experiences through this very personal and touching experience.

Proceeds for this special screening will be directed to the Opportunity International Australia, India Program.

Eight Sixty photographic exhibition

  • Opening night: 9 Oct 2008
  • Exhibition: 10 - 28 Oct
  • Location: Sydney, Australia
  • Host: Opportunity International Australia
  • In March 2008, photographer and Ambassador Rick Carter travelled to India with Opportunity International Australia to capture the vast scale of poverty in this compelling country, documenting the lives of those transformed by a small loan that enabled them to grow a business, earn an income and move out of poverty.

This October, Carter's photographic exhibition Eight Sixty (http://www.eightsixty.org) is on show at Blender Gallery in Sydney. Looking beneath the colourful surface of India, Eight Sixty captures the lives of women and their families in the battle to lift themselves out of poverty, illustrating them with dignity and hope. The exhibition's title refers to the number of people currently living in poverty in India - an incredible 860 million.
