Australia's governance aid - evaluating evolving norms and objectives (pdf 331Kb)
Good governance commonly espouses the efficient management of a country's institutions and social and economic resources in an open, accountable manner.
Since its emergence as the prevailing developmental paradigm in the early 1990s, the governance agenda has become a central part of the objectives of the Australian aid program.
This paper examines the Australian approach to promoting 'good governance', focusing on:
- What good governance means in the context of development theory and practice
- How governance came to be a core part of AusAID's work?
- How good governance relates to Australia's national interest
- How foreign policy-focused concepts of governance compare with developmentally-focused versions
