This paper reviews the current thinking on the potential economic benefits from cross-border transport infrastructure projects, drawing on case studies from the Mekong and Central Asian regions.The paper identifies and discusses key issues relating to such cross-border infrastructure projects, including:
- the relationships between infrastructure, trade and economic growth
- distribution of benefits from cross-border projects
- cooperation on institutional and financing issues amongst countries
- challenges arising from differences in geography, economic size, and institutional capacities
