Australian Development Gateway

The Australian Development Gateway (ADG) strives to support members of the development community in their efforts to reduce poverty and enhance sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. The site has been created with participation from members of government, private, academia and non-government organisations. User feedback mechanisms have been incorporated to guide future directions of the site. The site is optimised for low bandwidth access to enable the widest participation throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Capacity Building

The concept of capacity (pdf 141kb)

Despite the broad use of the terms capacity and capacity development there remains a lack of shared understanding of what is meant when these terms are used. Different actors use the terms to describe different concepts.

This analysis examines the paradox associated with such drivers understandings of capacity and capacity development, resulting in a definition used for this report.

The report makes the important point that a lack of common understanding is not a purely abstract problem but has practical implications across a range of issues such as how donors harmonise on capacity development and how we monitor capacity development.
