Australian Development Gateway

The Australian Development Gateway (ADG) strives to support members of the development community in their efforts to reduce poverty and enhance sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. The site has been created with participation from members of government, private, academia and non-government organisations. User feedback mechanisms have been incorporated to guide future directions of the site. The site is optimised for low bandwidth access to enable the widest participation throughout the Asia Pacific region.

This document aims to help familiarise the reader with Sector Wide Approaches (SWAps) and help prepare them face the challenges they pose.

The document is structured in six sections:
- Section 1 - provides an overview of Sector Wide Approaches.
- Section 2 - considers the core components of a sector program, as well as an overview of alternative ways of channelling aid.
- Section 3 - looks at the broad implications of using SWAps as a means to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
- Section 4 - considers how to support a sector program.
- Section 5 - reviews the broader development context, including the links between a SWAp and a Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP).
- Section 6 - list of further readings with weblinks.
