Australian Development Gateway

The Australian Development Gateway (ADG) strives to support members of the development community in their efforts to reduce poverty and enhance sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. The site has been created with participation from members of government, private, academia and non-government organisations. User feedback mechanisms have been incorporated to guide future directions of the site. The site is optimised for low bandwidth access to enable the widest participation throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Local initiatives for better hygiene (pdf 1.38mb)

This publication examines four case studies on community-based initiatives to improve hygiene behaviour and draws out lessons learned on what worked well and what didn't. The case studies are drawn from projects in Bangladesh, the Philippines and India.

The publication highlights a range of lessons learned, including both positive and negative lessons, from several perspectives:

- NGO involvement
- Technology and financing
- Gender and poverty
- Effectiveness, continuity and replication
