Literacy & numeracy
Meeting kids at the school gate: The literacy and numeracy practices of a remote Indigenous Community (pdf 122kb)
This paper discusses the community literate and numerate practices in the Northern Territory, and highlights the continuities and discontinuities through the transition experiences of seven Indigenous students. The Northern Territory had the largest proportion of students attending schools in remote areas in the country. 44 percent of all students attended remote schools compared to the national average of less than 5 percent.
In particular the study aims to document the literacy and numeracy practices valued in the home community, community school and urban high school. It highlights any continuities and discontinuities between the various contexts.
