Distance education: An option for increasing access and improving quality in secondary education (pdf 460kb)
As the number of children completing primary school grows, pressure is building for a more far-reaching expansion of secondary schooling. This document examines distance learning as an option for secondary education in developing countries. It also offers four models of distance education as well as in-country examples.This paper identifies the need for developing nations to adapt secondary education in order to increase participation and success. The paper examines several different issues:
- economic development
- strengthening democracy and social cohesion
- prioritizing primary vs. secondary education
- challenges in the expansion of secondary education
