Young people and HIV/AIDS: opportunity in crisis (pdf 509kb)

This paper is a UNICEF, UNAIDS, and WHO advocacy publication that makes a case for the need to focus on young people as a central component of national AIDS control programmes. It includes a range of statistics, including detailed tables of data for Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Latin America, Asia, Middle Eastern and North African countries, that clearly show young people are at the centre of the epidemic and explain why they are particularly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS.

In addition, this paper outlines a ten-step strategy for accelerated action to prevent HIV/AIDS among young people that includes fighting silence and stigma, increasing access to core interventions such as information, skills and services, decreasing young people's vulnerability and ensuring that they have opportunities to participate.
