The HIV/AIDS crisis in Papua New Guinea (pdf 323kb)
This paper presents the dimensions of HIV/AIDS infection and its spread throughout Papua New Guinea. It outlines the biological, social and political drivers responsible for the rapid rise of HIV/AIDS infections to identify practical steps to stop the current trends. In Papua New Guinea, HIV/AIDS is spreading through heterosexual sex and social conventions of promiscuity. The HIV virus is attacking a population already debilitated by malaria, tuberculosis and diarrheal diseases. These are endemic because of low standards of living. This article outlines these problems and then discusses Australia's response.
