Poverty implications of HIV/AIDS in the Pacific (pdf 340kb)

The overall objective of this study is to quantify the poverty impacts of an escalating HIV/AIDS crisis in the Pacific, and to raise awareness and increase understanding among key decision makers.

The specific objectives include:

- reviewing the poverty situation in the Pacific, and assessing the merits of selected poverty measurement methodologies
- presenting expenditure and income effects associated with HIV/AIDS
- assessing household impacts of the HIV/AIDS epidemic by simulating the impact of HIV/AIDS-related expenditure and income effects on households with PLWHA
- estimating the aggregate impact of HIV/AIDS on poverty between 1987 and 2020, using the Fiji Islands and PNG as case studies
- recommending interventions that need additional resources and those that are adequately supported
