Building Blocks: Africa-wide briefing notes on psycho-social support (pdf 387kb)

This is one in a series of six 'Building Blocks' publications. It seeks to explore the psychosocial support need that orphans and other vulnerable children have. The notes include the following:

- An overview that explains why programs need to strengthen the skills and resources of families and communities to provide psychological and emotional support to children
- An outline of the psychosocial impact of HIV/AIDS on children
- Guidelines for programs aimed at providing psycho-social support to orphans and vulnerable children
- Possible ways of taking action to strengthen support for orphans and vulnerable children

There is a growing evidence base for strategies that are effective in supporting orphans and vulnerable children. As the evidence base is not yet comprehensive, strategies in the briefing notes include both those that have been implemented together with suggestions for strategies based on the experience of people working with orphans and vulnerable children. As such, strategies are not given in any order of priority or relative effectiveness.
