The role of open, distance and flexible learning in HIV/AIDS prevention and mitigation (pdf 684kb)
This study explores the possibilities of open, distance and flexible learning (ODFL) through an examination of some of the key initiatives being undertaken to translate national HIV/AIDS policy into practice in Mozambique and South Africa. It draws on interviews and focus groups with young people affected by HIV/AIDS - many of whom are out of school - along with policy and strategy documents, agency reports and academic critiques, to identify:
- effective initiatives and approaches in supporting young people
- gaps in services and supports for young people
- the learning needs and favourite ways of learning of young people affected by HIV and AIDS
- potential uses of ODFL to improve access to education and support for young people
The report also provides detailed case studies of select initiatives that use internet, radio, comic books, magazines, self-learning guides, community workers and other means to deliver education and support.
