Preparing national strategies to achieve the Millennium Development Goals

This UNDP handbook is a practical guide to help developing countries prepare national development strategies to support achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

It translates the recommendations of the UN Millennium Project and lessons learned from the project's country advisory work into a user-friendly 'how to' guide that assists countries initiating their own MDG-based strategies.

The handbook covers the following five-step approach:
- Launch an effective and inclusive process
- Take an inventory - review existing strategies and establish a baseline
- Conduct a needs assessment
- Develop a 10-year framework for action
- Write a three to five year MDG-based national development strategy

This handbook is available to download as a single document or as individual chapters.
