Preventing HIV/AIDS in infrastructure projects in China (pdf 258kb)
The economic boom in Asia is seeing a mushrooming of construction work and infrastructure projects throughout the region. Whilst this rapid development contributes positively to the future of the region, it also brings with it the potential for disastrous social and health impacts including: increased transmission of communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS, drugs and human trafficking, increased vulnerability of migrant and ethnic minority groups, and road accidents. It is estimated that in the People's Republic of China alone, over a quarter of the 140 million floating population is engaged in the construction industry. This paper outlined the experiences of the Baolong Healthy and Safe Action Project (BHSA) which brings lessons-learnt on how to ameliorate the risk of HIV/AIDS transmission in complex infrastructure projects.
