Education in emergencies: the gender implications (pdf 621kb)

The paper introduces readers to various features of education delivered in both short-and long-term emergency situations, noting the importance of life skills training and the role of education in reconstruction and peace-building.

It then describes factors that limit girls' educational opportunities in crisis situations, including:

- Rates of sexual violence and abuse against girls, which may increase in emergency situations
- Higher likelihood of early marriages
- Higher proportions of male teachers, as well as the presence of older male students, making girls more vulnerable to sexual abuse in schools
- Increased likelihood of pregnancy at a younger age
- Mental and physical trauma or disabilities suffered as a result of the emergency or crisis
