Institutions and the political economy of corruption in developing countries (pdf 47K)
The Centre for Democratic Institutions (Australian National University) discussion paper uses Indonesia's experiences to explore how political institutions affect the dynamics of corruption in developing countries.
It expands the established concepts that corruption is a drag on economic development and that democratic governance is a critical ingredient in containing corruption.
The paper discusses how to secure property rights in countries where democracy is weak and the judiciary is either controlled or corrupted.
