How do the peri-urban poor meet their energy needs? (pdf 855kb)

This case study of a shantytown in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, aimed to investigate how the peri-urban poor meet their energy needs, the constraints they face, and what the policy implications might be.

The findings of the study highlight problems that are commonly found among the urban poor, and underline the importance of improving understanding of the socio-economic conditions of the shantytowns prior to designing energy projects.

The study will be useful to private sector energy companies whose clients includes poor groups, governments, energy regulators, donors, and other stakeholders, in understanding the links between poverty and energy, and what can be done to improve energy access by the urban poor.
