Ecosystems, livelihoods & disasters: approach to disaster risk management (pdf 1mb)
This publication by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) deals with natural disasters and the ways in which an ecosystems approach can reduce their impact. It is divided into three sections:
- Section 1 provides five reasons why it is important to integrate ecosystems and long-term livelihoods concerns into disaster risk reduction
- Section 2 provides information about the ecosystem approach and how its application can contribute to reducing the risk of disasters and to alleviating the impacts of disasters when they do occur
- Section 3 offers eight practical recommendations for implementing an integrated approach to disaster management, each accompanied by examples from the field
A glossary, list of resources, references, and related presentations from the IUCN's Commission on Ecosystem Management are also provided at the end of the document.
