Participatory forest management & poverty reduction: a review of the evidence (pdf 630kb)

This document is a review of the impact of PFM on poverty. The review uses a case study approach to understand the different forms of PFM that have been implemented around the world. It also evaluates how PFM have impacted on the social and economic aspects of the livelihoods of those who depend on forests.

The inclusion of communities in the management of state owned or formerly state owned forest resources has become increasingly common in the last 25 years. As a result, many countries have now developed, or are in the process of developing, changes to national policies and legislation that institutionalise Participatory Forest Management (PFM).
