This report outlines the DEVFISH project and the gender issues in the tuna industry in the Pacific region. In order to promote gender equality in the tuna industry, it is necessary to identify the roles that men and women play as stakeholders in the industry, but also as members of the general community. The DEVFISH project aims to improve and coordinate the poverty-eradication-oriented national fisheries sector policies. This paper looks at the following:
- The participation of women in Pacific Islands fisheries
- Key constraints on participation
- Assessment of impacts on women
- Reducing negative impacts of the tuna industry
- Potential areas of employment for women
- Areas for development assistance
