Rural non-farm employment under trade reform: evidence from Vietnam, 1993-2002 (pdf 400kb)
This paper examines the potential effect of the trade policy reform on non-farm employment in rural Vietnam during the period 1993-2002.Vietnam's rural economy has substantially diversified over the past two decades as a result of radical trade policy reforms. The rural non-farm sector has grown rapidly and become an important source of employment and income for rural households.
The paper finds that while a more liberalised agricultural sector promotes non-farm diversification, supportive policies and further investment in the rural non-farm sector can further enhance poverty reduction in rural areas.
