Income generation for the rural poor: the Australian aid program's rural development strategy (pdf 606K)
This AusAID paper focuses on income generation in the rural development sector, also targeting basic needs and services in rural areas through education, governance, health and infrastructure activities. The Australian Government's strategy for the rural development sector in the aid program is to focus on reducing rural poverty by increasing opportunities for the poor to generate income. Increased income can provide the poor with the freedom to make choices about how to improve their lives. It allows them to build assets, reduce vulnerability to disasters and improve their food security.
Australia will take a three-pronged approach to working in partner countries:
- Assisting partner governments to develop and administer policies that will promote income generation
- Working directly with rural communities on income generating projects and
- Developing collaborative partnerships in agricultural research for development.
