Food security in the South Pacific Island countries (pdf 150kb)
Countries included in the analysis include the Cook Islands, Fiji Islands, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu.The paper explores a number of key issues including:
- Food security at the national and household levels
- Trends in primary food commodities for production and export
- Past and future trends in dependency on food imports
- Past and current approaches to national food security in these countries
Also proposed are a number of strategies that could assist these countries ensure national and regional food security into the future, such as investment in rural infrastructure, agricultural research and extension, irrigation and appropriate price incentives.
