Health Systems
The world's political and international health leaders recognise the urgent need to make a major, sustained commitment to strengthening health systems. This renewed political interest presents an opportunity to make sustainable improvements that will bring benefits across disease areas and health programs, and redouble global efforts to meet the challenge of achieving the Millennium Development Goals.AusAID's 2006 policy for Australian Development Assistance in Health: Helping health systems deliver, for example, acknowledges the need to focus on health systems as a whole, not just specific health issues or health services, if development initiatives are to be sustainable in the long term.
Health systems encompass issues such as policy, planning, and management; health sector financing; health workforce management; health sector monitoring and evaluation; infrastructure and information systems that support health systems. Follow the links below for a range of resources looking at these issues, including reports, guides and toolkits, websites, research and policy documents.
