Developing new technologies to address neglected diseases (pdf 690kb)
This paper, published by the DFID Health Resource Centre, focuses on the complementary roles of product development partnerships (PDPs) and advanced market commitments (AMCs) as ways of giving incentives to industry to develop new health technologies for neglected diseases. It addresses the issue of public funding (push funding) and private donors (pull funding) in the often neglected disease sector. It also examines the reaction of companies to these different types of funding and concludes that "push" funding is more responsive, and "pull" funding is only effective when accompanied by "push" incentives.
In the neglected disease sector, push funding will likely be needed in when new products are introduced, although it is difficult to generalise because costs of entering the market, distribution of expertise and development challenges differ across disease and technology.
