Education through demonstration: interactive health training

ITEM Interactive CDROMs combine video, course materials, manuals, glossaries, posters and Q and A sections to demonstrate health care, medical and surgical procedures in developing country contexts.

They contain between 45 and 70 minutes of high quality video. Viewers move between the various elements on the CDROM at the click of a button.

All text components of the CDROMs can be printed as paper copies and the video is easily copied separately as VCD or DVD which can be viewed on television sets.

These CDROMs provide a quality and versatile resource for use in teaching institutions, workshops and for in-service training in the field.

CDROMs completed so far include:

Cleft Lip Repair, Cleft Palate Repair, Bilateral Cleft Lip Repair
Each of the three CDROMs demonstrates the repair of cleft deformities in children. Australian plastic surgeon Dr Michael McGlynn from the Sydney Children's Hospital Randwick gives a step-by-step commentary while assessing the deformity, marking the points of incision and then each part of the repair.

Immunization: the health worker's guide
Narrated in the Lao language with both Lao and English subtitles, this CDROM was designed for training Lao health workers and contains 66 minutes of video, quizzes, manuals and references in both Lao and English.

Infection Prevention and Control
Filmed in Suva Fiji in association with Fiji School of Nursing, this CDROM demonstrates how to prevent infections in hospital and health care settings.

Managing Type 2 Diabetes
This is a video that covers medical treatment, diet and exercise for Type 2 Diabetes and complements a course developed by the Fiji School of Medicine.

Burns Management
This two-DVD set includes video showing how to manage a variety of burns from simple scalds to serious full-thickness injuries that need skin grafting. The second DVD shows detailed surgical procedures.

Basic Computer Skills
These DVDs provide a good understanding of basic computer skills (including training in Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint) for those who have little or no experience.

ITEM Interactive, based in Sydney, has developed and refined this comprehensive training solution through projects with AusAID, the World Health Organisation and the Asian Development Bank among others. For further details, contact ITEM Interactive: robsimms@item.com.au
