Gem of the Pacific (pdf 760kb)

This NZAID article examines how New Zealand is helping the Cook Islands rebuild its pearl industry.

The article discusses the impact of Tropical Cyclone Martin in 1997 on the black pearl industry in the Cook Islands. It also reviews the difficulties faced by those who are pearl farmers, and the increasing trend to move away from the industry.

The paper then discusses the involvement of the Ministry of Marine Resources in the NZAID/AusAID initiative - the Cook Islands Marine Resource Industry Strengthening Programme - and the move towards educating farmers on the issues. It also looks at assisting those with the experience and knowledge to build plans and strategies from the bottom up.
