Re-thinking policies to cope with desertification (pdf 1.7mb)
This report provides insight into the issue of international policy imperatives to overcome desertification. It summarizes the wealth of experience and expertise present at the Joint International Conference "Desertification and the International Policy Imperative" (17-19 December 2006, Algiers, Algeria).Topics covered include:
- The policy context for combating desertification
- Innovations to mainstream desertification in the policy agenda
- Lessons learned from National experiences
- The role of regional groupings in policy formulation
- Harnessing traditional knowledge and scientific innovations
- Connecting policies for desertification, climate change and biodiversity loss
- Future Outlook - informed and effective policy regime
The report concludes in stating that it is essential that there be a continual review of accumulated experience, exploration of transferable lessons and debate of new options that could be more frequently incorporated into policy processes at all levels.
