Australian Development Gateway

The Australian Development Gateway (ADG) strives to support members of the development community in their efforts to reduce poverty and enhance sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. The site has been created with participation from members of government, private, academia and non-government organisations. User feedback mechanisms have been incorporated to guide future directions of the site. The site is optimised for low bandwidth access to enable the widest participation throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Land & planning

Using village planning to address community problems

This article assesses the success of a joint UNICEF and NGOs village planning initiative underway in India.

It discusses the use of community consultation and participatory planning in improving the planning of villages to address community problems. The process has helped increase the engagement between community members, NGOs and the district delivery system and support the State in strengthening its implementation of the initiative for women and children.

Results of the project include:
- Improved institutional delivery
- More girls go to schools
- Immunisation levels have increased
