Fixing health systems
This e-book examines the Tanzania Essential Health Interventions Project (TEHIP) and addresses the important lessons, observations, and recommendations. The Tanzania Essential Health Interventions Project (TEHIP) has sought to test a premise that called for health reforms based not just on increased funding but on more strategic investments in health.
The book explains that the TEHIP has achieved and improved many facets of the Tanzanian health system including the following:
- In two Tanzanian districts, annual budgets are recast to address the local burden of disease - targeting funds on a more selective list of health interventions in proportion to the impact of specific diseases
- Resulting improvements in the health picture in those districts have dramatic, encouraging implications
The e-book concludes by saying that many deaths that currently occur in developing countries are preventable and that now there is the knowledge to deliver better quality health care without waiting for additional expenditure or the design of new drugs and vaccines.
